Roads are too narrow in the shared space section, cars force their way past squeezing cyclists into the cobble stones in the gutter, so cyclists feel it is safer to ride on the pavement, which is wrong. The road surface is too slippery as it is made from granite stone setts which are lethal when wet, and do not meet the minimum friction requirements for road junctions that carry upwards of 10000 cars per day.
